I have wanted to redecorate my sofa and chairs with creamy-white slipcovers ever since Rachel Ashwell and Shabby Chic hit the market! At the time, I had kids at my house all the time. My two daughters and their friends, as well as a tribe of nieces and nephews and two dogs! White was not the best color choice for my furniture! I would wait–until the teenagers had become adults and the nieces and nephews had grown up and the dogs turned white!
And wait I did!
The teenagers are all adults. The nieces and nephews have grown and the dogs (very sadly) have gone to that big park in the sky. Then the grandchildren started coming–babies, bottles, snacks and spills! Who cares about white furniture when you have grandchildren to cuddle and love! We adopted another dog too. So I waited a bit longer–twelve years and 5 grandchildren longer!
A few months ago, as I walked through the tired looking living room for the billionth time, the realization hit me! There will always be children and dogs in my home–always!
What am I waiting for?
I was never happy with the choice of fabric on my furniture, but I have always loved the furniture style. Waiting is over–time to get those dreamy, creamy-white slipcovers!
My furniture has seen a lot of action over the years, but it still has really good bones. I wanted slipcovers so they could be washed when needed. Seriously, how hard can it be to find reasonably priced, separate-cushion slip covers (not tuck-in slip covers)! Was I in for a rude awakening!
I took some measurements, grabbed my laptop, searched for “slip covers with separate cushions” and found a bunch of sites! So far so good. Then I clicked on one and nearly fainted! They were expensive!!! I mean really expensive. Not “a little higher in price than I thought, but so worth it expensive”. More like, “I can buy a new couch for half the price of the slip cover, expensive!!!!!” Made to order with my fabric was over $800!–just for the couch! I had to rethink this!
My sister-in-law Trisha had purchased a slip-covered sofa from Ikea. What a great idea! Buy the furniture slip-covered and when it needs cleaning, it’s “off with the old” and “into the washer”! Or, you can purchase a new slipcover in an entirely different color and change your room completely ! I had gone on the IKEA site and found a sofa that was almost the same size as mine and purchased a navy denim cover for under $200 a few years back and it still looks great after multiple washings. Could I find a white one and covers for the chairs and ottoman too?
I went to the IKEA website and there it was, in all its creamy white splendor–the slipcover of my dreams–3 separate bottom cushions, 3 separate top cushions ( 2 of which are “L” shaped) in a heavyweight, washable creamy-white colored denim for the sofa and separate cushion club chair slipcovers to match and they even had “T” cushions!!!! I think I actually heard a choir of Angels sing! The best part? The sofa slipcover was–wait for it–$129 and the chair covers were only $49 each–on sale. The ottoman cover was just $29! My debit card was smoking!
I swear–the day I saw the UPS guy walking up my driveway with the boxes it was like one of those slow motion scenes where the music is playing and two people are running slowly toward each other, arms outstretched, smiles on their faces! All I could focus on was the boxes!
I love how this room is shaping up! The chair covers are a little big and when I wash and dry them I will put them on inside-out and make some alterations–nothing fancy. I made some valances for the living room and kitchen and valances and cafe curtains in the dining area, along with some new pillows from canvas painters drop cloths–cost me around $20 all together! I found fringed linen squares for arm covers and threw some over the top cushions to help them stay clean too.
Yes, I am having an affair with my living room and my creamy-white denim, Rachel Ashwell-like slip covers that I bought from IKEA (for a song). I’m also a little bit in love with the area rug that I got at Home Depot for $88 (12′ x 16′-regular price!). The refinished barn workbench below the t.v. and the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint on the cabinet in the dining area made a huge difference too.
I’m really happy with the way they turned out. The room feels different and I love the “quiet” of the creamy white with the wood tones and painted furniture. They’re wrinkled and a little baggy in some areas, snug in others and I love them !
I still have some work to do–the coffee table is feeling really badly about herself, but I think my living room and I will be very happy together.
Casual, comfortable and welcoming–just the way I want my home to feel.
Just the way I want my family and friends to feel!
