Let me tell you the story of my Home Goods chalkboard redo!
One of my favorite places to get ideas for decor for my home is at my favorite store “Home Goods”! They have an endless supply of decorative accents including, rugs, frames, vases, baskets, bedding–you name it, they have it–even furniture.
And the prices are ridiculously low!
My daughter and I were there about a month ago looking for some items to decorate a blank wall in her kitchen and we found these amazing chalkboards ( note the “S” on the end of chalkboards). It was love at first site so I had to get one too!
I knew from the minute I set eyes on this that I needed to change the color. The “SAT” & “SUN” were screened in red paint and beneath the black paint was red as well, so when they distressed it the red was pretty apparent! Not a big fan of red. Also, when we got them home we realized that the Chalkboard was not really a “chalkboard”. Chalk wouldn’t write on it. Well, I could fix that too.
I had already painted the back and started taping off the front when I realized I hadn’t taken any pictures of the before product–AGAIN! It’s like a mental block or something.
Not a fan of the red and black together!
I decided to paint over the red letters on “SAT” and “SUN”, but when finished I wound up painting the other days of the week as well so they would all match.
I used chalkboard paint (3 coats) over the chalkboard area so you can actually write on it! See the wooden details in the corners and center–there are also cute little hooks on either side.
I finished up by painting the entire thing in Old White Annie Sloan Chalk paint and waxed it with 2 coats of Annie Sloan wax.
Roughed it up a bit with some fine sand paper and done!
Here it is, the finished product! ready to replace the shelf that has been on the wall in the kitchen for–(ahem) 14 years!
