We all know how expensive American Girl Doll accessories can be and how little girls love them. We have been blessed with two gorgeous (in my totally unbiased opinion) granddaughters and when they see something in a store or catalog that they would like to have, the first thing they do is run to their Papa with a picture and see if he can make it for them!
He rarely says no!
When the American Girl catalog arrives its usually an exciting couple of hours looking over all the new dolls, furniture, clothes and accessories! Last November Emilie & Ashlynn came to us with the latest catalog and asked if we could make them the loft beds in the catalog for their dolls for Christmas. We looked at them and were shocked with the price –over $200 for a bed FOR A DOLL! and, in our case, it would be two beds! We are clearly in the wrong business here!
I have to admit, they were pretty cute and wouldn’t cost anywhere near the price in the catalog to make! My husband can make anything from the measurements in a catalog, so we asked the girls what colors they wanted for their beds and Joe went to his wood shop and I ran to find fabric for the bedding and paint and this is what we came up with!
Emilie chose turquoise and Ashlynn wanted purple so I found a cute corduroy fabric that has a brown background with turquoise dot and appliqued flowers in purple, turquoise, and lime. Perfect! Then a little purple corduroy and turquoise corduroy for the backs and border on the quilts with matching pillows and the bedding was finished!
Beneath the bed there are shelves on one side and a desktop on the other. We put corkboard on the inside and chalkboard on the outside on the shelf side and the area with the desk/counter has chalk board on the inside and cork on the outside.
They still needed a little something to dress them up so I took a trip to the dollar section at Target and found a couple of little things to decorate the loft beds with. A Hello Kitty jar of bubbles, some little cartons, stickers and my favorite find–the little tins with the label slots–and some cute post-it notes and thumbtacks.
(you can see I actually took these photos before I renamed the blog!)
We are still waiting on the chairs–Papa is picky and want to make ones that the dolls can actually sit on without falling off, so we have to be patient! We will have these available in the shop in the near future too!
